The Downtown Detention Center, as the new jail was called, had been under construction for more than three years. Once open, it would house every arrestee in Nashville. The building occupied a block near the state capitol, on a plot of land where Nashville’s old central jail had stood for thirty-five years. That jail, notoriously violent and corrupt, had symbolized the good-ol’-boy era of Nashville law enforcement, and the Downtown Detention Center was replacing it both physically and symbolically.
